Recent concerns regarding rock pile stability have lead to the instigation of a multi-disciplinary research program to investigate the characteristics and behavior of the piles.

Weathering of the mined rock containing varying amounts of pyrite could, over the long term, affect the rock pile. stockpiles, waste piles, spoil piles, and hoppers.

Some of the dump-point practices recommended in this handbook are not covered by the standards but the information is included so that it can be shared with miners and mine operators to improve the safety of dumping operations.

Slope failure in the overburden dump threatens the mine as it can bring the mining activities to a standstill. Failures of waste piles in open-pit coal mines of mountainous southeastern.

The major concerns about CMM associated with surface coal mining are emissions from: (1) the minable coal bed during excavation and processing, (2) the coal and other gassy beds in overlying (overburden) and underlying (underburden) strata exposed by mining operations, and (3) excavated overburden and coal stored as waste piles on mine sites.
